Meet the Kids: Katiana

Katiana2.jpg

Katiana came to us after her mother, frustrated with looking for work, left Carrefour and abandoned her children. As a way to survive, Katiana lived with relatives as a restavèk (an unpaid indentured servant), sleeping on floors and trying to get by.

At 13, most orphanages wouldn't take in an older child like her for fear of them being difficult to manage. We took a chance on this beautiful young woman, and we couldn't be happier to have her in the family. She's bright, helpful, and an excellent role model for the younger kids. She has mastered English and is often seen teaching the younger children. Katiana does very well in school and hopes to soon go to college where she wants to study nursing.
